Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was a pioneering African American physician and an emblematic figure of Black excellence in the medical field. Born in Delaware in 1831, Crumpler broke racial and gender barriers by becoming the first African American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States in 1864, from the New England Female Medical College.
Her career was marked by a profound dedication to serving communities with limited access to medical care, particularly freed slaves during the post-Civil War era. Dr. Crumpler’s work extended beyond the boundaries of traditional medicine, as she placed a significant emphasis on preventive care and health education, which was revolutionary at the time.
Dr. Crumpler’s legacy is immortalized in her book, “A Book of Medical Discourses,” published in 1883, which is one of the first medical publications by an African American. In this work, she shared her vast knowledge and experiences, focusing on the medical care of women and children, and providing invaluable insights into public health practices of the 19th century.
