Sleeping Through Juneteenth
Juneteenth is often celebrated through gatherings, music, remembrance, reflection, and community.
About Juneteenth
Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.
Recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth serves as both a celebration of freedom and a national opportunity for remembrance, education, reflection, and continued commitment to the ideals of liberty, citizenship, and human dignity.
This year, my observance arrived differently.
I slept.
At first glance, that may seem like an unusual way to honor a day associated with freedom and recognition. Yet the longer I reflected, the more appropriate it felt.
Juneteenth commemorates a profound historical reality: freedom existed before it was fully recognized. The truth was already present. Recognition simply arrived later.
There is wisdom in that.
Many of us spend our lives carrying responsibilities, expectations, obligations, and ambitions long after our minds, bodies, and spirits have requested restoration. We continue building, creating, producing, serving, and striving. Sometimes we forget that freedom includes permission to pause.
This year, my Juneteenth observance became an act of restoration.
I rested.
Not from purpose.
Not from vision.
Not from commitment.
But from motion.
Rest is not the absence of progress. Often, it is the condition that makes progress sustainable.
As I enter Month Six of my 2026 annual theme—The Year Genius Presence Becomes #DO7ELaw™—I am increasingly aware that Genius Presence is not merely about action. It is also about awareness, regulation, alignment, and stewardship.
Sometimes presence looks like movement.
Sometimes presence looks like creation.
Sometimes presence looks like leadership.
“…And sometimes genius presence looks like allowing yourself to rest without apology.”
Tonight, I release my Genius Juneteenth track as both a creative, cultural celebration and reflection.

Not because the journey is complete.
“…Because freedom includes the right to rest while continuing the journey.”
Sometimes freedom is public.
Sometimes freedom is collective.
Sometimes freedom is deeply personal.
“And sometimes freedom looks like sleeping through Juneteenth and waking up to closed windows muting atmospheric evening Juneteenth fireworks… renewed.”
